Or inspiration from Crusader Kings could be taken and you had to delegate counties over a particular limit to subordinate counts. Although a limit on that point: Don't think an increased number of counties is a good way to extend player count with the current game design however as it's not that fun to manage it all late game already on the existing large maps. More players than 5 in a single map would be nice (or some dynamics where rebellions can become new bot players). Europa Universalis 4 for meaningful diplomacy (even if it's far more advanced than needed here). In the current version it's "funny" given the narrated messages but completely devoid of depth and with very little utility beyond delaying total war with a particular "ally" for a few turns.

Diplomacy sucks and could use a total rework. Ok, the battles could use some finesse and polish, but, for the most part, this game is pretty much a perfectly fun gaming experience that has lasted decades! The voice acting, music, and atmosphere of this game are perfect. Don't mess with anything else! Just update the game to play nicely with widescreen resolutions and higher color settings.
